One of the steps taken by the Italian Government to reduce the spread of the Corona virus pandemic is to close the entire territory. The regulation makes many residents just stay at home.
When Italy imposed mass quarantine, closed shops, restaurants and schools in an effort to slow the Corona virus pandemic, telecommunications companies noticed an increase in user traffic there.
The biggest advantage of this mass quarantine comes from Fortnite and Call of Duty (CoD). The local telecommunications company noticed a surge in traffic from the two games.
"We report an increase of more than 70% of internet traffic through our land network. With the largest contribution from online games such as Fortnite," Telecom Italia Chief Executive Officer Luigi Gubitosi was quoted as saying on CNET's website on Saturday (3/14/2020) ).
Epic, as the creator of Fortnite, has not yet responded to comments about the surge in traffic. Another acknowledgment was made by the video game publisher Call of Duty which released its latest series this week. It has attracted 6 million people to play in the first 24 hours.
Meanwhile, telecommunications companies Vodafone in the UK and Telia in Sweden are preparing for high bandwidth demand. Similar preparations were also made for local US operators and services following the closure of schools throughout the country.
Verizon in the United States claimed there has been no increase in internet data usage so far. But the telecommunications company said it had plans to spend USD18.5 billion this year to improve networks that support 5G wireless and greater reliability.
The network will be prioritized for requests in important places such as hospitals and government agencies when the network is under pressure.
